It is said: *ṣallā bi-n-nār* (صلى بالنار) means he adhered to it and was burned by it.

And it has been read with the *fatḥa* (vowel sign) on the *tā’* (تَصْلَى).

The evidence for this reading is His saying: $\text{\{illā man huwa ṣālin al-jaḥīm\}} (Except one who is destined for the Blazing Fire) (As-Saffat: 163).

Abū ‘Amr and ‘Āṣim read it with the *ḍamma* (vowel sign) on the *tā’* (تُصْلَى) based on His saying: \text{\{thumma al-jaḥīma ṣalawh\}} (Then the Hellfire they shall cause him to enter) (Al-Haqqah: 31), and His saying: \text{\{li-khazanati jahannam\}} (To the keepers of Hell). *Ṣalawh* (they caused him to enter) is like *aṣlawh* (they caused him to enter).

A group read it with the *shaddah* (doubling) on the *ṣād* (تُصَلَّى).

It is said that among the Arabs, *al-maṣlā* (المصلى) is when they dig a pit, gather much burning coal in it, and then thrust a sheep into its midst. What is roasted over coals, on a griddle, or in an oven is not called *maṣlā*.

And His saying: \text{\{ḥāmiyah\}} (Fierce/Scorching) means it has been kindled and intensely heated for a long duration, so no heat equals its heat. Ibn ‘Abbās said: It has been heated, and thus it blazes fiercely against the enemies of Allāh.

As for their drink, it is His saying, the Exalted: \text{\{tusqā min ‘aynin āniyah\}}$ (They will be given to drink from a boiling spring).
