Verse range: 88:5

Open in Qurani

Al-Ghāshiyah (The Overwhelming Event): Verse 5

Verse Segment:

تسقى من عين . . . . .

Translation & Exegesis:

They will be given to drink from a spring...

Commentary on the Term Āniyah (آني):

The term الآني (al-āni) means that which has reached the extreme limit of its heat, derived from the root Īnā’ (الإيناء), which means delay.

  • Supporting Hadith: The Prophet (peace be upon him) said to a man who arrived late for Friday prayer and then stepped over people's necks: "You delayed (ānayta) and caused harm (ādhayta)."
  • Parallel Quranic Verse: A similar verse is found in Surah Ar-Rahman: {يَطُوفُونَ بَيْنَهَا وَحَمِيمٍ آنٍ} (They will wander between it and scalding water) (Ar-Rahman: 44).
  • Interpretation by Commentators: The commentators state that the heat of this water has reached such an intensity that if a single drop were to fall upon the mountains of this world, they would melt.

Verse Segment:

{ لَيْسَ لَهُمْ طَعَامٌ إِلَّا مِنْ ضَرِيعٍ }

Translation & Exegesis:

{ They will have no food except from *Ḍarīʿ* (a thorny, bitter plant). }

Commentary on Their Food:

As for what they will eat, it is stated by the Almighty: {لَيْسَ لَهُمْ طَعَامٌ إِلَّا مِنْ ضَرِيعٍ} (They will have no food except from Ḍarīʿ).
