How can there be for the polytheists a treaty in the sight of Allah and with His Messenger, except for those with whom you made a treaty at al-Masjid al-Haram? So as long as they are upright toward you, be upright toward them. Indeed, Allah loves the righteous [who fear Him].

Original Text Segment Analysis:
**قوله: { كيف } استفهام بمعنى الإنكار كما تقول: كيف يسبقني مثلك،**
Translation: His statement: {How} (Kayfa) is an interrogative used to mean denial (Inkar), just as you would say, "How could someone like you precede me?"
**أي لا ينبغي أن يسبقني وفي الآية محذوف وتقديره: كيف يكون للمشركين عهد مع إضمار الغدر فيما وقع من العهد إلا الذين عاهدتم عند المسجد الحرام، لأجل أنهم ما نكثوا وما نقضوا قيل: إنهم بنو كنانة وبنو ضمرة فتربصوا أمرهم ولا تقتلوهم فما استقاموا لكم على العهد فاستقيموا لهم على مثله { إن الله يحب المتقين } يعني من اتقى الله يوفي بعهده لمن عاهد والله أعلم.**
Translation (Summary of the implied meaning and context): This means: It is not appropriate for them to precede us [in keeping covenants]. There is an omission in the verse, the meaning being: How can the polytheists have a covenant while harboring treachery regarding the covenant made, except for those with whom you made a covenant near the Sacred Mosque (Al-Masjid al-Haram)? This exception is because they did not break or violate the treaty. It is said that these are Banu Kinanah and Banu Damrah. Therefore, wait for their decision and do not kill them. If they remain steadfast with you regarding the covenant, then you remain steadfast with them regarding the like of it. {Indeed, Allah loves the pious} (Inna Allaha yuhibbu al-muttaqin), meaning whoever fears Allah fulfills his covenant with whomever he has made a covenant. Verse 7:
**{ كيف وإن يظهروا عليكم لا يرقبوا فيكم إلا ولا ذمة يرضونكم بأفواههم وتأبى قلوبهم وأكثرهم فاسقون * اشتروا بآيات الله ثمنا قليلا فصدوا عن سبيله إنهم سآء ما كانوا يعملون * لا يرقبون فى مؤمن إلا ولا ذمة وأولائك هم المعتدون }**
Translation: {How? And if they were to gain the upper hand over you, they would not observe toward you any bond of kinship or any covenant. They please you with their mouths, but their hearts refuse, and most of them are defiantly disobedient (Fasiqūn). * They have sold the signs of Allah for a little price, and thus they have barred [people] from His way. Indeed, evil is what they were doing. * They do not observe toward a believer any bond of kinship or any covenant, and those are the transgressors (al-Mu'tadūn).}
