Surah At-Tawbah 9:88
ﱍ ﱎ ﱏ ﱐ ﱑ ﱒ ﱓ ﱔ ﱕ ﱖ ﱗ ﱘ ﱙ ﱚ ﱛ ﱜ
But the Messenger and those who believed with him fought with their wealth and their lives. Those will have [all that is] good, and it is those who are the successful.

When the Almighty described the state of the hypocrites in fleeing from Jihad, He then clarified the state of the Messenger and those who believed with him as the opposite thereof, as they expended wealth and life seeking God's pleasure and drawing near to Him.
The word {But} (لكن) carries a benefit: the implication is that if these hypocrites refrained from the expedition, then those better than them, purer in intention and belief, have proceeded, similar to His saying: {But if these disbelieve in it, then We have entrusted it to a people who are not disbelievers in it} (Al-An'am: 89), and {But if they are too proud, then those who are with your Lord} (Fussilat: 38).
After describing them as hastening to Jihad, He mentioned the benefits and advantages they attained, which are of several types:
- His saying: {And those will have the best things} (وأولئك لهم الخيرات). Know that the word {the best things} (الخيرات) encompasses the benefits of both worlds because the term is unrestricted. It is also said that {the best things} refers to the Huris (fair-eyed maidens), based on His saying: {In them are fair-eyed maidens} (Ar-Rahman: 70).
- His saying: {And those are the successful ones} (وأولائك هم المفلحون). Thus, {those will have the best things} refers to the reward, and {they are the successful ones} refers to deliverance from punishment and torment.
- His saying: {Allah has prepared for them Gardens beneath which rivers flow, wherein they will abide eternally} (أعد الله لهم جنات تجري من تحتها الانهار خالدين فيها). It is possible that these Gardens serve as an explanation for {the best things} and {success}. Alternatively, {the best things} and {success} could refer to worldly benefits, such as success in battle, honor, wealth, power, and victory, while the Gardens refer to the reward of the Hereafter. {The great attainment} (الفوز العظيم) is an expression signifying that this state is a lofty station and a high rank.
