Tafsir of Al-Balad 90:6

Abu 'Ubaydah said: *Labid* (لبد) is a verbal noun derived from *talbid* (التلبيد), meaning abundant wealth piled one upon another. Al-Zajjaj said: It is a form indicating abundance, just as one says *rajulun hatim* (رجل حطم) if he is one who breaks much. Al-Farrā’ said: Its singular form is *labdah* (لبدة), and *labid* (لبد) is the plural. Some scholars consider *labid* itself to be singular. Similar forms are *qism* (قسم) and *hatm* (حطم), both signifying abundance in either case. Al-Layth said: *Mālun labid* (مال لبد) is wealth so abundant that its depletion is not feared. We have already mentioned the exegesis of this word when discussing the verse: **{He will be upon it a burden}** (Al-Jinn: 19). The meaning here is that this disbeliever says: "I have spent much wealth in enmity toward Muhammad." What is intended is the abundance of what he expended on things that the people of Jahiliyyah (ignorance) called virtues (*makārim*), and which they termed high status (*ma'ālī*) and boasts (*mafākhir*).
