Surah Ash-Shams (The Sun): Verse 6

وَالْأَرْضِ وَمَا طَحَاهَا (And [by] the Earth and He Who spread it flat)

Two Issues Arise Here:

The First Issue: The reason this (mentioning the Earth) is postponed after the mention of the Heaven (in the preceding verse, And [by] the Heaven and He Who constructed it) is due to the subsequent verse in Surah An-Nazi'at:

**{ وَالْأَرْضَ بَعْدَ ذَلِكَ دَحَاهَا }** (And the Earth, after that, He spread it out.) (An-Nazi'at: 30)

The Second Issue: Al-Layth said: Ṭaḥw (طحو) is like Daḥw (دحو), meaning spreading out. The substitution of the letter Ṭāʼ (ط) for Dāl (د) is permissible. The meaning is: He expanded it.

‘Aṭā’ and Al-Kalbī said: He spread it out over the water.

Verse 7

**! 7 < { وَنَفْسٍ وَمَا سَوَّاهَا } > 7

<** (And [by] the soul and He Who proportioned it)
