Translation of Mafatih al-Ghayb Excerpt

Verse 4: Indeed, your efforts are diverse (or scattered).

This is the answer to the oath. Thus, the Almighty swears by these things that the deeds of His servants are diverse.

This means they are different in their recompense. Shatta (شتى) is the plural of shatīt (شتيت), like marḍā (مرضى) is the plural of marīḍ (مريض).

It is called diverse because of the great distance between some parts and others. Shatāt (الشتات) means distance and separation. It is as if it is said: Your deeds are far apart from one another, because some of them are misguidance and some are guidance; some necessitate Paradise, and some necessitate the Fire. How far apart they are!

Similar to this verse are the Almighty's sayings:

  • "The companions of the Fire are not equal to the companions of the Garden" (Al-Hashr: 20).
  • "Is one who was a believer like one who was a transgressor? They are not equal" (As-Sajdah: 18).
  • "Evil is that which they judge, and Allah created the heavens and the earth in truth, that He may recompense each soul for what it has earned, while they will not be wronged. Have you seen the one who..." (Al-Jathiyah: 21).
  • And His saying: "...nor the shade" (Fatir: 21).

The commentators said that this verse was revealed concerning Abu Bakr and Abu Sufyan.

Verses 5–10:

**{So as for him who gave and feared [Allah],}** **{And believed in the best [reward],}** **{We will surely ease him toward ease.}** **{But as for him who was stingy and felt himself self-sufficient,}** **{And denied the best [reward],}** **{We will surely ease him toward hardship.}**
