Surah At-Tin (The Fig): Verse 6

{Except for those who have believed and done righteous deeds}

Know that regarding this statement: {Except for those who have believed and done righteous deeds}:

  1. According to the first opinion (of scholars): This exception is munqati' (disjunctive/interrupted). The meaning is: However, those among the elderly who were righteous will have an everlasting reward for their obedience and their patience with Allah's trial of old age and decrepitude, and for enduring hardships, performing acts of worship, and struggling with their inability to rise easily.
  2. According to the second opinion: The exception is muttasil (connected) and clearly linked (to the preceding context).

{Then for them is a reward uninterrupted} (or unfailing)

Regarding this statement: {Then for them is a reward ghayru mamnūn}: There are two interpretations:

  1. It means a reward that is not diminished (manqūṣ) nor cut off.
  2. It means a reward that they are not reminded of with reproach (i.e., Allah will not bestow it upon them with a sense of obligation or complaint).

Know that both meanings relate to the attributes of the reward: it must be unending, and it must not be accompanied by a sense of obligation or favor (minnah) from the Bestower.
