Surah At-Tin (The Fig): Verse 7

{فما يكذبك بعد بالدين} (Then what causes you to deny the Recompense after this?)

Regarding this verse, there are two questions:

Question 1: Who is being addressed by the phrase, **{فما يكذبك}** (Then what causes *you* to deny)?

There are two opinions:

  1. It is an address to humankind (الإنسان) using a shift in address (التفات). The meaning intended is: Anyone who claims that an event (the Resurrection) will not occur, while evidence points to its occurrence, is a liar. The implication is: What compels you to persist in this falsehood?
  1. It is an address to the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him). This is the view preferred by Al-Farrā'. The meaning is: O Messenger, after the appearance of these clear proofs, who will deny you concerning the Recompense (the Day of Judgment)?

Question 2: What is the basis for the astonishment expressed?

The basis for astonishment is that the creation of man from a mere drop of fluid (nutfah), his shaping into a perfectly formed human being, his gradual development through stages of growth until maturity, and then his subsequent decline (tankees) until he reaches the most feeble stage of old age—all of this serves as a clear proof of the Creator's power over Resurrection and Reassembly (Hashr and Nashr). Therefore, whoever witnesses this process yet remains insistent on denying the Resurrection, there is nothing more astonishing than him.

{أليس الله بأحكم الحاكمين} (Is not Allah the Most Just of judges?)

Then, the Almighty said: {أليس الله بأحكم الحاكمين}
