Say, [O Muhammad], "O people, if you are in doubt as to my religion - then I do not worship those which you worship besides Allah; but I worship Allah, who causes your death. And I have been commanded to be of the believers
Tafsir
Verse range: 10:104
{O mankind}: O people of Mecca.
{If you are in doubt regarding my religion}: And its validity and soundness. Here is my religion: listen to its description, present it to your intellects, and examine it with the eye of fairness, so that you may know it is a religion into which no doubt can enter. It is that I do not worship the stones that you worship instead of the One who is your God and Creator.
{But I worship Allah who takes your souls}: He described Him as "taking souls" (tawaffi) to show them that He is the One truly worthy of being feared and revered, so that they might worship Him rather than that which is capable of nothing.
{And I have been commanded to be of the believers}: Meaning that Allah commanded me to do so, through the intellect He instilled in me and through what He revealed to me in His Book.
It is also said: Its meaning is, "If you are in doubt regarding my religion and what I am upon, then do not entertain the impossible in your minds, do not doubt my affair, and cut off your hopes regarding me. Know that I will not worship those whom you worship instead of Allah, nor will I choose misguidance over guidance," similar to His saying: {Say, "O disbelievers..."}.
{I have been commanded to be}: Its origin is "bi-an akuna" (that I be). The preposition (bi) has been omitted. This omission may be of the regular type, which is the omission of prepositions with "an" and "anna," or it may be of the irregular type, as in the saying: "I commanded you [to do] good" (omitting the preposition).
