And [mention, O Muhammad], the Day We will gather them all together - then We will say to those who associated others with Allah, "[Remain in] your place, you and your 'partners.' " Then We will separate them, and their "partners" will say, "You did not used to worship us,
Tafsir
Verse range: 10:28
{مكانكم} "Stay in your places." Do not depart until you see what will be done with you.
{أنتم وشركاؤكم} "You" is an emphatic pronoun for the implied command in "Stay in your places," as it functions in place of the verb "Stay." "And your partners" is a conjunction linked to it. It has also been recited as wa-shurakā’akum (in the accusative case), implying the waw means "with," and the governing agent is the verbal meaning contained within "Stay in your places."
{فزيلنا بينهم} "We separated them." We divided them and severed the bonds that connected them in the worldly life. Or, it means We distanced them from one another after having gathered them at the station of judgment. Their partners will disavow them and their worship, as the Almighty says: "Then it will be said to them: 'Where are those you used to associate [with God]?' They will say: 'They have strayed from us'" (Ghafir: 73). It has also been recited as fazăyalnā baynahum, similar to saying ṣā‘ara khaddahu and ṣa‘arahu, or kālamtuhu and kallamtuhu.
{ما كنتم إيانا تعبدون} "It was not us that you used to worship." You were only worshipping the devils, for they commanded you to take rivals unto God, and you obeyed them.
{فكفى بالله شهيدا بيننا وبينكم إن كنا عن عبادتكم لغافلين * هنالك تبلوا كل نفس مآ أسلفت وردوا إلى الله مولاهم الحق وضل عنهم ما كانوا يفترون}
