{ إلا ساعة من النهار } They will perceive their time spent in the world as short. It is also said: [they will perceive their time] in the graves as short, due to the terror of what they witness.

{ يتعارفون بينهم } They will recognize one another, as if they had only been separated for a short while. This occurs at the moment they emerge from their graves, after which their mutual recognition ceases due to the severity of the situation they face.

If you ask: What is the grammatical position of { كأن لم يلبثوا } and { يتعارفون }? I reply: As for the first, it is a state (ḥāl) of the pronoun "them" (hum); meaning, He will gather them appearing as those who have not tarried but for an hour. As for the second, it either relates to the adverbial time, or it serves as an explanation for the statement { كأن لم يلبثوا إلا ساعة }, because mutual recognition does not persist over a long period, but rather turns into estrangement.

{ قد خسر } This implies an omitted verb of speech; meaning, they will recognize one another saying this. Alternatively, it is a testimony from Allah Almighty regarding their loss. The meaning is that they suffered a loss in their trade and exchange of faith for disbelief.

{ وما كانوا مهتدين } They were not guided in their trade, nor did they have knowledge of it. This is an independent sentence (*isti’nāf*) containing a sense of astonishment, as if it were said: "How great is their loss!"
