ﱯ ﱰ ﱱ ﱲ ﱳ ﱴ ﱵ ﱶ ﱷ ﱸ ﱹ ﱺ ﱻ ﱼ ﱽ
And whether We show you some of what We promise them, [O Muhammad], or We take you in death, to Us is their return; then, [either way], Allah is a witness concerning what they are doing

Tafsir
Verse range: 10:46
{Then to Us is their return} This is the response to "If We take you away." The response to "If We show you" is omitted. It is as if it were said: "Whether We show you some of what We promise them in this world—and that is that—or We take you away before We show it to you, then We will show it to them in the Hereafter."
If you ask: "God is a witness to what they do in both abodes, so what is the meaning of 'then' (thumma)?"
I say: The witnessing is mentioned, but what is intended is its consequence and result, which is punishment. It is as if He said: "Then God is the punisher for what they do."
Ibn Abi ‘Ablah read it as thamma (with a fatḥah), meaning "there" (hunālika). It is also possible that it means: God will render His testimony regarding their deeds on the Day of Resurrection, at the time when their skins, tongues, hands, and feet speak, testifying against them.
