Surah Yunus (54–56)
{And if every soul that has wronged had all that is in the earth, it would offer it as ransom}
- {That has wronged}: An adjective for "soul" (nafs).
- {All that is in the earth}: Meaning all the treasures, wealth, and benefits of this world, despite their abundance.
- {It would offer it as ransom}: It would make it a ransom for itself. It is said: fadahu (he ransomed him), so he iftada (ransomed himself). It is also said iftadahu with the same meaning as fadahu.
{And they will conceal regret when they see the punishment}
- They will be stunned by seeing what they did not anticipate and what had never crossed their minds. They will witness such severity and magnitude of the matter that it will strip them of their strength and overwhelm them. They will be unable to weep, scream, or perform the actions of the distraught, except for concealing regret and sorrow within their hearts.
- This is like one led to crucifixion, rendered motionless by the horror of the impending calamity, overcome to the point where he cannot utter a word, remaining frozen and stunned.
- It is said: Their leaders will conceal regret from their followers whom they led astray, out of shame and fear of their reproach.
- It is said: Asaru (concealed) means they made it sincere (akhlasuha). This is either because hiding something is making it sincere, or from the saying: "The sirr (secret) of a thing is its essence." There is mockery here regarding them and their errors at the time of their "sincere" regret.
- It is said: Asaru means they manifested it, from the saying: "He asara the thing and asharahu," meaning he revealed it. In this state, there is no endurance.
{And it will be judged between them}
- Meaning between the oppressors and the oppressed; the mention of "wronging" (zulm) points to this.
- He then follows this with the announcement that to Him belongs the entire dominion, that He is the Rewarder and the Punisher, and that the reward and punishment He promised are the Truth.
- He is the One capable of giving life and causing death; no one else is capable of these. To His reckoning and recompense is the return, so that it may be known that the matter is as such, and thus He is feared and hoped for, and those who are deceived are not deceived by it.
{O mankind, there has come to you an instruction from your Lord and healing for what is in the breasts and guidance and mercy for the believers. Say, "In the bounty of Allah and in His mercy - in that let them rejoice; it is better than what they accumulate."}
