{If you have believed in Allah} Meaning: If you have affirmed Him and His signs, {then upon Him rely}—meaning, entrust your affairs to Him for protection against Pharaoh.

He stipulated "submission" (al-islām) as a condition for reliance (tawakkul). This means they must surrender their souls to Allah, making them sound and purely for Him, with no share for Satan; for reliance cannot coexist with mixing [truth with falsehood]. A parallel in speech is: "If Zayd strikes you, then strike him, provided you have the strength."

{They said: "Upon Allah we rely"} They said this only because they were sincere. Consequently, Allah—glorified be He—accepted their reliance, answered their supplication, saved them, destroyed those they feared, and made them successors in His land. Therefore, whoever wishes to be fit for reliance upon his Lord and for entrusting affairs to Him must abandon mixing [truth with falsehood] in favor of sincerity.

{Do not make us a trial} Meaning: Do not make us a place of trial for them. That is: do not let them inflict torment upon us, thereby tempting us away from our religion. Or, do not make us a trial for them, such that they are tempted by us, saying: "If these people were upon the truth, they would not have been afflicted."

{And We inspired Moses and his brother: "Settle your people in Egypt in houses, and make your houses places of worship, and establish prayer, and give glad tidings to the believers."}
