Tafsir of Hud 11:9-11

{And if We give man a taste of mercy...}

• {Man}: Refers to the human species in general.
• {Mercy}: A blessing, such as health, security, or wealth.
• {Then We withdraw it from him}: We strip away that blessing.
• {Indeed, he is despairing}: He is intensely hopeless that the blessing which was taken away will ever return to him. He cuts off his hope for the vastness of God’s bounty, lacking patience, submission to His decree, or the utterance of istirja (saying "To God we belong").
• {Despairing, ungrateful}: Extremely ungrateful for the previous blessings he enjoyed, forgetting them entirely.
• {When the evils depart from me}: That is, the calamities that caused me distress.
• {Indeed, he is exultant}: Insolent and arrogant.
• {Boastful}: Boasting to people about the blessings God has given him. His joy and pride have distracted him from gratitude.
• {Except for those}: Who believe; for their habit is that if they receive mercy, they are grateful, and if a blessing is removed from them, they are patient.

{Then would you possibly leave [out] some of what is revealed to you, or is your breast constrained by it because they say, "Why has there not been sent down to him a treasure or come with him an angel?" You are only a warner, and God is, over all things, Disposer of affairs.}
