Hud: 102

"And thus is the seizing of your Lord..."

The Kaf (in ka-dhalika) is in the nominative case. Its estimation is: "And like that seizing is the seizing of your Lord."

It is in the accusative case for those who read it as akhadha (a verb). It has also been recited as: "When He seized the cities..."

"...while they were wrongdoers." This is a circumstantial qualifier (hal) describing the cities.

"...painful, severe." Meaning: agonizing and difficult for the one being seized.

This is a warning regarding the dire consequences of injustice for every unjust city—whether the disbelievers of Mecca or others. Indeed, it applies to everyone who wrongs another or wrongs their own soul by committing a sin. Therefore, everyone who sins must fear the painful, severe seizing of their Lord, hasten to repent, and not be deceived by the respite granted to them.

"Indeed, in that is a sign for those who fear the punishment of the Hereafter. That is a Day for which the people will be gathered, and that is a Day [that will be] witnessed."
