Hud: 111

{And indeed, all of them...} The tanwin (nunation) is a substitute for the genitive construction (mudaf ilayh). It means: "And all of them," meaning all those who differed regarding it.

{...will surely be paid in full by your Lord [the reward of] their deeds} This is the response to an omitted oath. The lam in {lama} is a muwatti’ah (a particle that prepares the way for an oath), and the ma is an augmentative particle. The meaning is: "And by God, all of them will surely be paid in full by your Lord [the reward of] their deeds," whether good or evil, belief or denial.

Readings:

  • It is read as {wa-in kullā} with the nun lightened (takhfif), treating the lightened in as having the same grammatical effect as the heavy inna, in consideration of its origin, which is the heavy form.
  • Ubayy read: {wa-in kullu lamā layuwaffiyannahum}, where in is negative and lamā carries the meaning of illā (except).
  • The reading of ‘Abdullah [ibn Mas‘ud] explains this: "And none are there except that He will pay them in full."
  • Al-Zuhri and Sulayman ibn Arqam read: {wa-in kullā lamman layuwaffiyannahum} with the tanwin, similar to His saying: {wa-ta’kulūna al-turātha aklan lamman} (And you consume the inheritance with a devouring consumption [89:19]). The meaning is: "And all of them are gathered," meaning assembled, as if it were said: "And all of them together," like His saying: {fasajada al-malā’ikatu kulluhum ajma‘ūn} (So the angels prostrated, all of them together [15:30]).

{So remain on a right course as you have been commanded, [you] and those who have turned back with you [to Allah], and do not transgress. Indeed, He is Seeing of what you do.}
