Tafsir of Hud 11:15

Surah Hud 11:15

ﱧ ﱨ ﱩ ﱪ ﱫ ﱬ ﱭ ﱮ ﱯ ﱰ ﱱ ﱲ ﱳ ﱴ

Whoever desires the life of this world and its adornments - We fully repay them for their deeds therein, and they therein will not be deprived.

Hud: 15

{نوف إليهم} We deliver to them their rewards for their deeds, full and complete, without diminution in this world. This refers to the health and provision they are granted therein.

It is said: They are the people of ostentation (riya’). It is said to the reciter among them: "You wanted it to be said, 'So-and-so is a reciter,' and it has been said." To the one who maintained kinship ties and gave charity: "You did it so it would be said, and it has been said." To the one who fought and was killed: "You fought so it would be said, 'So-and-so is brave,' and it has been said."

Anas ibn Malik said: They are the Jews and the Christians; if they gave to a beggar or maintained kinship ties, their reward for that was hastened for them in the form of abundance in provision and health in the body.

It is also said: They are the hypocrites who fought alongside the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ), so he assigned them a share of the spoils.

Readings:

  • (Nuwaffi) with a ya’: The action is attributed to Allah (Mighty and Majestic).
  • (Tuwaffa ilayhim) with a ta’: In the passive voice.
  • Al-Hasan’s reading: (Nufi), lightened with the ya’ preserved, because the condition occurred in the past tense, as in the saying: "He says, 'Neither my wealth is absent, nor is it forbidden.'"

{وحبط ما صنعوا فيها} Their deeds, or their handiwork, became void in the Hereafter. This means they had no reward because they did not intend the Hereafter by them; they only intended the world, and they were given in full what they intended.

{وباطل ما كانوا يعملون} Their work was, in itself, void, because it was not performed for a correct purpose, and void work has no reward.

Readings:

  • (Wa-batala): As a verb.
  • ‘Asim: (Wa-batilan) in the accusative. This has two interpretations:
    1. Ma is indefinite, and batilan is the accusative object of ya‘malun (i.e., they were doing something void).
    2. It functions as an infinitive (masdar), meaning: "Their deeds were void with a voidness."

{أفمن كان على بينة من ربه ويتلوه شاهد منه ومن قبله كتاب موسى إماما ورحمة أولائك يؤمنون به ومن يكفر به من الأحزاب فالنار موعده فلا تك في مرية منه إنه الحق من ربك ولكن أكثر الناس لا يؤمنون}
