Tafsir of Hud 11:48

"It was said, 'O Noah...'"

It is recited: (O Noah, descend) with a damma on the 'ba'.

{With peace from Us} Meaning: kept safe and protected by Us, or that peace is bestowed upon you and you are honored.

{And blessings upon you} Meaning: and blessings are bestowed upon you. Blessings (barakat) are the growing, abundant goods. It is also recited as (and a blessing) in the singular.

{And upon nations from those with you} It is possible that "from" (min) is for clarification (li-l-bayan). In this case, it refers to the nations who were with him in the Ark, because they were groups, or they were called "nations" because nations would branch out from them.

It is also possible that it is for the purpose of indicating the end goal (li-ibda' al-ghayah), meaning: upon nations that will emerge from those who are with you. This refers to all nations until the end of time, which is the preferred interpretation.

The phrase {And nations} is in the nominative case as an initial subject (mubtada'), and {We will grant them enjoyment} is its descriptor. The predicate is omitted, with the implied meaning: "And from those with you are nations whom We will grant enjoyment." It was omitted because the phrase {from those with you} points to it.

The meaning is: Peace from Us and blessings are upon you and upon nations of believers who will emerge from those with you. And from those with you are nations who will be granted enjoyment in this world, then turned toward the Fire. Noah (peace be upon him) was the father of the prophets, and humanity after the Flood descended from him and those who were with him in the Ark.

Ka'b ibn Muhammad al-Qurazi said: This peace includes every believing man and woman until the Day of Resurrection, while the subsequent mention of enjoyment and punishment includes every disbeliever.

Ibn Zayd said: They descended while Allah was pleased with them, then He brought forth from them offspring; some of whom He had mercy upon, and some of whom He punished. It is also said: The nations granted enjoyment refer to the peoples of Hud, Salih, Lot, and Shu'ayb.

{That is from the news of the unseen which We reveal to you, [O Muhammad]. You did not know it, neither you nor your people, before this. So be patient; indeed, the [best] outcome is for the righteous.}
