Tafsir
Verse range: 11:53
{You have not brought us a clear proof} This is a lie and a denial on their part, just as the Quraysh said to the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him): "Why has a sign not been sent down to him from his Lord?"—this, despite his signs being beyond enumeration.
{...because of your words} This is a state (ḥāl) derived from the pronoun in "those who abandon our gods." It is as if they said: "We will not abandon our gods based on your words."
{And we are not believers in you} It is not fitting for people like us to believe someone like you in what you call us to. This is intended to make him despair of them ever responding to his call.
{We say only that some of our gods have possessed you with evil. He said: "I call Allah to witness, and you witness, that I am free from what you associate [with Him] * other than Him. So plot against me all together; then do not grant me respite."}
