That is from the news of the unseen which We reveal, [O Muhammad], to you. And you were not with them when they put together their plan while they conspired.
ﳆ ﳇ ﳈ ﳉ ﳊ ﳋ ﳌ ﳍ ﳎ ﳏ ﳐ ﳑ ﳒ ﳓ ﳔ
That is from the news of the unseen which We reveal, [O Muhammad], to you. And you were not with them when they put together their plan while they conspired.
Tafsir
Verse range: 12:102
{ذلك من أنباء الغيب نوحيه إليك}
{ذلك}: A demonstrative pronoun referring to the preceding account of Yusuf. The address is to the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ), and its grammatical position is that of an ibtida’ (subject).
{من أنباء الغيب نوحيه إليك}: This is the predicate (khabar). It is also permissible for dhalika to be a relative pronoun (ism mawsul) meaning "that which," in which case min anba’ al-ghayb is the relative clause (silah) and nuhihi is the predicate.
The meaning is: This account is from the Unseen (ghayb), which you would not have obtained except through revelation. You were not present with the sons of Ya’qub when they conspired—that is, when they threw their brother into the well—as He said: “And they agreed to put him into the bottom of the well” (Yusuf: 15).
This is a mockery of the Quraysh and those who denied him. It was not hidden from any of the deniers that he (the Prophet) was not a scholar of these narratives, nor had he met anyone who possessed them, nor heard from them, nor was it part of the knowledge of his people. When he informed them of this wondrous story—which baffled those who carried and narrated such tales—there remained no doubt that it was not from him, but rather from revelation. When they denied it, he mocked them, as if to say: "You know, O stubborn ones, that he was not a witness to the past generations." Similar to this is: “And you were not at the western side when We decreed to Musa the command” (Al-Qasas: 44).
{وهم يجمعون}: They were plotting against Yusuf and seeking to bring about his destruction.
{وَمَا أَكْثَرُ النَّاسِ وَلَوْ حَرَصْتَ بِمُؤْمِنِينَ * وَمَا تَسْأَلُهُمْ عَلَيْهِ مِنْ أَجْرٍ إِنْ هُوَ إِلَّا ذِكْرٌ لِّلْعَالَمِينَ}
