Surah Yusuf: 108

{هذه سبيلي} This path—which is the call to faith and monotheism—is my path. Both sabīl (path) and ṭarīq (way) can be treated as either masculine or feminine.

{أدعو إلى الله على بصيرة} He then explained his path by saying: "I call to Allah upon insight," meaning: I call to His religion with a clear proof, not blindly.

{أنا} The pronoun "I" is an emphasis for the hidden pronoun within the verb "I call" (adʿū).

{ومن اتبعني} This is a conjunction linked to it. It means: I call to it, and those who follow me call to it.

Alternative Interpretations:

  1. It is permissible for "I" (anā) to be an inchoative (subject), and "upon insight" (ʿalā baṣīrah) to be a fronted predicate. In this case, "those who follow me" is a conjunction linked to "I," informing the listener that he and his followers are upon proof and evidence, not upon whim.
  2. It is permissible for "upon insight" to be a state (ḥāl) derived from the verb "I call," which governs the nominative case for "I" and "those who follow me."

{وسبحان الله} And I declare Allah to be far above having partners.

Surah Yusuf: 109

{وما أرسلنا من قبلك إلا رجالا نوحي إليهم من أهل القرى أفلم يسيروا في الأرض فينظروا كيف كان عاقبة الذين من قبلهم ولدار الآخرة خير للذين اتقوا أفلا تعقلون}

We have not sent before you [O Muhammad] any but men from the people of the towns, to whom We revealed. Have they not traveled through the land and observed how was the end of those before them? And the home of the Hereafter is better for those who feared Allah. Will you not then use your reason?
