Surah Yusuf: 109
{Except men}
Not angels; because they used to say: "Had our Lord willed, He would have sent down angels" (Fussilat: 14). Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) narrated: It means there are no women among them. It is also said: This was in reference to Sajah, the false prophetess.
And the prophets of Allah have always been men.
{To whom We revealed}
It is also recited as nuhi ilayhim (We reveal to them), with the letter nun.
{From the people of the towns}
Because they are more knowledgeable and more forbearing, whereas the people of the deserts are characterized by ignorance, coarseness, and harshness.
{And the home of the Hereafter}
Meaning the home of the Hour, or the final state.
{Is better for those who fear [Allah]}
For those who feared Allah, so they did not associate partners with Him and did not disobey Him. It is also recited as afala ta‘qilun (Do you not reason?), with both the ta and the ya.
{Until, when the messengers despaired and were certain that they had been denied, Our victory came to them, and whom We willed was saved. And Our punishment cannot be repelled from the criminal people.}
