Tafsir
Verse range: 12:35
The meaning is: A thought appeared to them—that is, an opinion emerged for them—that they should imprison him. The pronoun in lahum (to them) refers to the Aziz and his household.
In the recitation of al-Hasan: li-tasjunannahu (with a ta), addressing the Aziz. It is an address by some of them to the Aziz and those around him, or to the Aziz alone, using the plural for magnification.
In the recitation of Ibn Mas‘ud: ‘ata hinin (with an ‘ayn). This is the dialect of Hudhayl. It is reported that ‘Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) heard a man reciting ‘ata hinin, so he asked, "Who taught you to recite this?" The man replied, "Ibn Mas‘ud." ‘Umar wrote to him: "Allah revealed this Quran and made it Arabic, and He revealed it in the dialect of Quraysh. So, teach the people in the dialect of Quraysh and do not teach them in the dialect of Hudhayl. Peace."
