{ثُمَّ بَدَا لَهُم} The subject of the verb *bada* (it appeared) is implicit, indicated by what follows it: *li-yusjununnahu* (that they should imprison him).

The meaning is: A thought appeared to them—that is, an opinion emerged for them—that they should imprison him. The pronoun in lahum (to them) refers to the Aziz and his household.

{مِّن بَعْدِ مَا رَأَوُا الْآيَاتِ} These are the proofs of his innocence. This only happened because the woman pressured her husband, exerting her influence over him completely. He was compliant with her, gentle, and submissive, with his reins in her hand. This caused him to forget the signs he had witnessed, and he acted according to her opinion to imprison him and inflict humiliation upon him, as she had threatened. This was either because she despaired of his obedience to her, or because she hoped that prison would break him and make him subservient to her.

In the recitation of al-Hasan: li-tasjunannahu (with a ta), addressing the Aziz. It is an address by some of them to the Aziz and those around him, or to the Aziz alone, using the plural for magnification.

{حَتَّىٰ حِينٍ} Meaning: for a period of time. It is as if she suggested he be imprisoned for a duration until she could see what would come of him.

In the recitation of Ibn Mas‘ud: ‘ata hinin (with an ‘ayn). This is the dialect of Hudhayl. It is reported that ‘Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) heard a man reciting ‘ata hinin, so he asked, "Who taught you to recite this?" The man replied, "Ibn Mas‘ud." ‘Umar wrote to him: "Allah revealed this Quran and made it Arabic, and He revealed it in the dialect of Quraysh. So, teach the people in the dialect of Quraysh and do not teach them in the dialect of Hudhayl. Peace."

{وَدَخَلَ مَعَهُ السِّجْنَ فَتَيَانِ ۖ قَالَ أَحَدُهُمَا إِنِّي أَرَانِي أَعْصِرُ خَمْرًا ۖ وَقَالَ الْآخَرُ إِنِّي أَرَانِي أَحْمِلُ فَوْقَ رَأْسِي خُبْزًا تَأْكُلُ الطَّيْرُ مِنْهُ ۖ نَبِّئْنَا بِتَأْوِيلِهِ ۖ إِنَّا نَرَاكَ مِنَ الْمُحْسِنِينَ}
