Surah Yusuf: (7) "Indeed, there were in..."

{In Yusuf and his brothers} Meaning: In their story and their account.

{Are signs} Meaning: Marks and proofs of Allah’s power and wisdom in all things.

{For those who ask} Meaning: For those who inquired about their story and came to know it. It is also said: Signs of the prophethood of Muhammad (peace be upon him) for the Jews who asked him about it, so he informed them of the truth without having heard it from anyone or read it in any book. It is also recited as "an Ayah" (singular), and in some codices as "an 'ibrah" (a lesson).

It is said: Allah the Exalted related the story of Yusuf and the transgression of his brothers against him to the Prophet (peace be upon him) because of the transgression he saw from his own people, so that he might find solace in him.

Their names are: Judah, Reuben, Simeon, Levi, Zebulun, Issachar, Dinah, Dan, Naphtali, Gad, and Asher. The first seven were from Leah, the daughter of Ya'qub’s maternal aunt. The other four were from two concubines: Zilpah and Bilhah. When Leah passed away, he married her sister Rachel, who bore him Benjamin and Yusuf.

{When they said, "Yusuf and his brother are more beloved to our father than we, while we are a group. Indeed, our father is in clear error."}
