Yusuf: (78) They said, "O Aziz..."

They sought to move his compassion by reminding him of the right of their father, Ya‘qub, and that he is a man of great age—or great status. They reminded him that Benjamin was dearer to him than they were, and that they had already informed him that one of his sons had perished, leaving him grieving, and that he found solace in his brother.

"So take one of us in his place" Take one of us as a substitute, by way of holding as collateral or enslavement.

"Indeed, we see you are of the doers of good" To us, so complete your benevolence. Or: "It is your habit to do good, so continue according to your habit and do not change it."

(79) He said, "I seek refuge in Allah from taking [anyone] except him with whom we found our property. Indeed, if we did so, we would be among the wrongdoers."
