And ask the city in which we were and the caravan in which we came - and indeed, we are truthful,"
Tafsir
Verse range: 12:82-83
{The village we were in} refers to Egypt. That is: send [someone] to its people and ask them about the reality of the story.
{And the caravan we arrived in} refers to the people of the caravan, who were a group from Canaan, neighbors of Jacob. It is also said they were from the people of San'a.
The meaning is: They returned to their father and told him what their brother had told them.
{He said: "Nay, but your own selves have made up a tale for you"}—a matter you desired. Otherwise, how would that man know that a thief is taken for his theft, were it not for your verdict and instruction?
{So patience is most fitting. It may be that Allah will bring them all to me}—Joseph, his brother, and Reuben, or someone else.
{Indeed, He is the All-Knowing} of my state of grief and sorrow.
{The All-Wise} who did not test me with this except for a wisdom and a benefit.
{And he turned away from them and said: "Alas, my grief for Joseph!" And his eyes turned white from the sorrow, and he was suppressing his grief.}
