They said, "By Allah, you will not cease remembering Joseph until you become fatally ill or become of those who perish."

Tafsir
Verse range: 12:85
{تفتأ} He intended: "You will not cease" (la tafta'u). He omitted the negative particle because it would not be confused with an affirmative statement. If it were affirmative, the lam and nun (emphatic particles) would be necessary, as in the verse: “I swore by God, I will not cease sitting.” The meaning of "not" here is "you will not cease."
Mujahid said: "You will not cease (la tafturu) from loving him," as if he treated futū' (ceasing) and futūr (languor/weakness) as synonymous. It is said: "He did not cease (mā fati'a) doing such-and-such." Aws said: “The horses did not cease returning and being called, With some catching up and others being cut off.”
{تكون حرضا} Meaning: on the verge of destruction due to illness. Illness has brought him to the brink of death (ahradahu al-marad). The word harad is used equally for the singular, plural, masculine, and feminine because it is an infinitive (masdar). The adjective form is harid (with a kasra under the ra). Similar examples are danaf and danif; both readings have been transmitted. Al-Hasan read it as hurud (with two dammahs). Similar examples in adjectives are rajul junub and ghurub.
