Tafsir
Verse range: 12:87
{فَتَحَسَّسُوا مِن يُوسُفَ وَأَخِيهِ} Seek information about Yusuf and his brother, and inquire after them. It is also recited with a jīm (tajassasū), as it is recited in [Surah] al-Hujurat. Both forms are derived from al-ihsās (perception/knowledge), as in: {When ‘Īsā perceived (ahassa) disbelief from them} (Al ‘Imrān: 52), and from al-jass (searching/probing). From this, people call human faculties al-hawāss (senses) and al-jawās (spies).
{مِن رَّوْحِ اللَّهِ} From His relief and easing of distress. Al-Hasan and Qatādah recited it as rawh (with a damma), meaning: from His mercy, by which the servants are brought to life.
{فَلَمَّا دَخَلُوا عَلَيْهِ قَالُوا يَا أَيُّهَا الْعَزِيزُ مَسَّنَا وَأَهْلَنَا الضُّرُّ وَجِئْنَا بِبِضَاعَةٍ مُّزْجَاةٍ فَأَوْفِ لَنَا الْكَيْلَ وَتَصَدَّقْ عَلَيْنَا إِنَّ اللَّهَ يَجْزِي الْمُتَصَدِّقِينَ}
When they entered upon him, they said, "O Aziz, adversity has touched us and our family, and we have brought goods of little value, so give us full measure and be charitable to us. Indeed, Allah rewards the charitable."
