Kill Joseph or cast him out to [another] land; the countenance of your father will [then] be only for you, and you will be after that a righteous people."
{Kill Joseph}
This is part of what was narrated after the words "when they said." It is as if they all agreed upon it, except for the one who said, "Do not kill Joseph." It is said that the one who ordered the killing was Simeon, and it is said it was Dan, while the rest were consenting, thus they were all considered as having ordered it.
{A land}
An indefinite, unknown land, far from civilization. This is the meaning of its indefiniteness and its lack of description. Because of this ambiguity, it is in the accusative case, like ambiguous adverbs of place.
{The face of your father will be free for you}
He will turn toward you with undivided attention, not turning away from you toward anyone else. The intent is the exclusivity of his love for them, free from anyone who might share it or compete with them for it. The mention of the "face" is to illustrate the meaning of his turning toward them, for when a man turns toward something, he turns with his face. It is also permissible that "face" refers to the essence, as in the Almighty’s saying: "And the Face of your Lord will remain" (Ar-Rahman: 27). It is also said that "will be free for you" means he will be free from the preoccupation with Joseph.
{After him}
After Joseph—meaning after disposing of him through killing or banishment. Or, the pronoun may refer to the act of killing or casting him away.
{Righteous people}
Repentant to God for what you have committed against him. Or, your relationship with your father will be mended through an excuse you prepare. Or, your worldly affairs will be set right and your matters will be organized after him, once your father’s attention is free for you.
{And you will be}
This is either jussive, as a conjunction to "will be free for you," or in the accusative case due to an implied "an" (that), with the "wa" (and) functioning as "with," as in the saying: "And conceal the truth" (Al-Baqarah: 42).
