Allah extends provision for whom He wills and restricts [it]. And they rejoice in the worldly life, while the worldly life is not, compared to the Hereafter, except [brief] enjoyment.

Ar-Raʿd: 26

{Allah extends provision} Meaning: Allah alone is the One who extends provision and restricts it, no one else. He is the One who extended the provision of the people of Mecca and expanded it for them.

{And they rejoiced} In what was extended to them of worldly life—a rejoicing of insolence and arrogance, not a rejoicing of happiness for the grace and favor of Allah upon them. They did not meet it with gratitude so as to deserve the bliss of the Hereafter. It remained hidden from them that the bliss of this world, compared to the bliss of the Hereafter, is nothing but a meager thing, enjoyed like the traveler’s provision—that which he hastens to consume, such as a few dates, a drink of barley meal, or the like.

Ar-Raʿd: 27–29

{And those who disbelieve say, "Why has a sign not been sent down to him from his Lord?" Say, "Indeed, Allah leaves astray whom He wills and guides to Himself whoever turns back [to Him]—Those who have believed and whose hearts are assured by the remembrance of Allah. Unquestionably, by the remembrance of Allah hearts are assured. Those who have believed and done righteous deeds—a good state is theirs and a beautiful place of return."}
