And those before them had plotted, but to Allah belongs the plan entirely. He knows what every soul earns, and the disbelievers will know for whom is the final home.

Ar-Raʿd: 42

{And those before them had plotted} He describes them as having plotted, then renders their plotting as no plot at all compared to His plotting, saying: {But all plotting belongs to Allah}.

He then explains this by saying: {He knows what every soul earns, and the disbeliever will come to know for whom is the final home}.

This is because He who knows what every soul earns and has prepared its recompense for it—that is the entirety of plotting; for He comes upon them from where they do not perceive, while they are in heedlessness of what is intended for them.

  • Variants: It is recited as al-kuffār (the disbelievers), al-kāfirūn (the disbelievers), and alladhīna kafarū (those who disbelieved).
  • The Term: Al-kufr here refers to its people. The intent behind al-kāfir (the disbeliever) is the generic category.
  • Variant: Janāḥ ibn Ḥubaysh recited: wa-sa-yuʿlamu al-kāfiru (And the disbeliever will be made to know), from aʿlamahu (He made him know), meaning: he will be informed.

Ar-Raʿd: 43

{And those who disbelieved say, "You are not a messenger." Say, "Sufficient is Allah as a Witness between me and you, and whoever has knowledge of the Book."}
