Ibrahim: (11) Their messengers said to them...

{We are only human beings like you} This is an admission of their statement that they are indeed human beings like them. They mean that they are like them in humanity alone; as for what lies beyond that, they are not like them. However, out of humility, they did not mention their own superiority, and they limited themselves to saying:

{But Allah bestows favor upon whom He wills of His servants} ...with prophethood. For He knows that He does not single them out for that honor unless they are worthy of being singled out for it, due to specific qualities they possess that distinguish them from the rest of their kind.

{Except by permission of Allah} They meant that bringing the sign you have proposed is not up to us, nor is it within our capability; it is a matter that depends solely on the will of Allah.

{And upon Allah let the believers rely} This is a command from them to all believers to rely [on Allah]. They intended themselves primarily by this command, as if they were saying: "It is our right to rely on Allah in enduring your stubbornness, your hostility, and what befalls us at your hands." Do you not see His saying: {And why should we not rely upon Allah}? Its meaning is: "What excuse do we have for not relying on Him?"

{While He has guided us to our ways} He has done for us that which necessitates our reliance upon Him, which is the granting of success in guiding each of us to the path that we are obligated to follow in religion.

If you ask: How is the command to rely [on Allah] repeated? I say: The first is to initiate reliance, and His saying {let the reliant rely} means: let the reliant remain steadfast in the reliance they have initiated, directing it toward themselves as previously mentioned.

(13) And those who disbelieved said to their messengers, "We will surely drive you out of our land, or you must return to our religion." But their Lord inspired to them, "We will surely destroy the wrongdoers. And We will surely cause you to dwell in the land after them. That is for he who fears My position and fears My threat."
