Surah Ibraheem 14:13

ﱵ ﱶ ﱷ ﱸ ﱹ ﱺ ﱻ ﱼ ﱽ ﱾ ﱿ ﲀ ﲁ ﲂ ﲃ ﲄ ﲅ

And those who disbelieved said to their messengers, "We will surely drive you out of our land, or you must return to our religion." So their Lord inspired to them, "We will surely destroy the wrongdoers.

{We will surely drive you out} {or you shall return} It is inevitable that one of these two things will happen: either your expulsion or your return [to our religion], as they swore to do.

If you ask: "Were they [the believers] ever upon their [the disbelievers'] religion so that they could 'return' to it?" I say: God forbid! Rather, "returning" here means "becoming." This is very common in the speech of the Arabs—so common that you rarely hear them use the word ṣāra (to become). Instead, they use ʿāda (to return). [Examples include:] "I no longer see him" (mā ʿudtu arāhu), "He no longer speaks to me" (ʿāda lā yukallimunī), or "So-and-so no longer has wealth" (mā ʿāda li-fulān māl).

Alternatively, they were addressing every messenger and those who believed in him, using the plural form to address the group, even if the intent was the individual.

{We will surely destroy the wrongdoers} This is a narrative that implies an omitted verb of speech, or it treats the act of revelation (waḥy) as speech, as it is a form of it. Abu Ḥaywah read it as li-yuhlikanna (He will surely destroy) and wa-li-yuskinannakum (and He will surely make you dwell) using the third-person prefix, in reference to [the verb] "He revealed" (awḥā), as the wording is in the third person. Similar to this is your saying: "Zayd swore that he would surely go out, and that I would surely go out."

{And We will surely make you dwell in the land after them} The "land" refers to the land and homes of the wrongdoers. Similar to this is: “And We caused the people who had been oppressed to inherit the eastern and western regions of the land” (Al-Aʿrāf: 137), and “And He caused you to inherit their land and their homes” (Al-Aḥzāb: 27).

Regarding the Prophet (peace be upon him): "Whoever harms his neighbor, God will make him inherit his house." I witnessed this myself recently: I had an uncle who was oppressed by a powerful man in the village I am from, who also harmed me through him. That powerful man died, and God granted me ownership of his estate. One day, I looked at my uncle’s children as they walked through it, entering and leaving its houses, giving orders and prohibitions. I remembered the saying of the Messenger of God (peace be upon him), told them about it, and we prostrated in gratitude to God.

{That is for whoever fears My standing} "That" refers to what God decreed regarding the destruction of the wrongdoers and the settling of the believers in their homes. It means: that matter is true for whoever fears My standing—meaning My position [of judgment]. It is the position of God where His servants will stand on the Day of Resurrection. Or, it is an insertion of the word "standing" (maqām). It is also said: "fears My standing over him," meaning My watching over his deeds. The meaning is that this is true for the righteous, as in His saying: “And the [best] outcome is for the righteous” (Al-Aʿrāf: 128).


{And they requested victory, and every obstinate tyrant failed. Before him is Hell, and he will be given a drink of purulent water. He will gulp it but will hardly be able to swallow it. And death will come to him from every place, but he is not to die. And before him is a massive punishment.}
