Surah Ibraheem 14:27



ﱝ ﱞ ﱟ ﱠ ﱡ ﱢ ﱣ ﱤ ﱥ ﱦ ﱧ ﱨ ﱩ ﱪ ﱫ ﱬ ﱭ ﱮ ﱯ ﱰ

Allah keeps firm those who believe, with the firm word, in worldly life and in the Hereafter. And Allah sends astray the wrongdoers. And Allah does what He wills.

{With the Firm Word} That which has been established by proof and evidence in the heart of its possessor and has taken root therein, such that he believes it and his soul finds tranquility in it.

Their steadfastness in this world: When they are tested in their religion, they do not waver. Just as those were steadfast who were tested by the People of the Trench, and those who were sawn with saws and whose flesh was combed with iron combs, and just as Jirjis, Shamshun, and others were steadfast.

Their steadfastness in the Hereafter: When they are questioned while the witnesses are gathered regarding their creed and religion, they do not stutter, they are not confounded, and the terrors of the Resurrection do not bewilder them. It is also said that the meaning is steadfastness during the questioning of the grave.

It is narrated from Al-Bara’ ibn ‘Azib (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) mentioned the taking of the believer’s soul, saying:

"Then his soul is returned to his body, and two angels come to him. They make him sit up in his grave and say to him: 'Who is your Lord? What is your religion? Who is your Prophet?' He says: 'My Lord is Allah, my religion is Islam, and my Prophet is Muhammad.' Then a caller calls from the heaven: 'My servant has spoken the truth.' That is the meaning of His saying: 'Allah keeps firm those who believe with the firm word.'"

{And Allah leads the wrongdoers astray} Those who did not hold fast to evidence in their religion, but rather limited themselves to imitating their elders and leaders, just as the polytheists imitated their forefathers, saying: "Nay, they said: 'We found our fathers...'" (Az-Zukhruf: 22-23).

Their leading astray in this world: They do not remain firm in times of trial; their feet slip at the first instance. In the Hereafter, they are even more astray and more prone to slipping.

{And Allah does what He wills} Meaning: That which wisdom necessitates. For the will of Allah is subordinate to wisdom—whether it be the strengthening of the believers, supporting them, and protecting them when they are steadfast and resolute; or the leading astray of the wrongdoers, abandoning them, and leaving them to their own devices when they slip.

{Have you not seen those who exchanged the favor of Allah for disbelief and settled their people in the home of ruin? * Hell, which they will [enter to] burn, and wretched is the settlement. * And they attributed to Allah rivals to mislead [people] from His way. Say, "Enjoy yourselves, for indeed, your destination is the Fire."}
