Surah Ibraheem 14:5

ﲜ ﲝ ﲞ ﲟ ﲠ ﲡ ﲢ ﲣ ﲤ ﲥ ﲦ ﲧ ﲨ ﲩ ﲪ ﲫ ﲬ ﲭ ﲮ ﲯ ﲰ ﲱ

And We certainly sent Moses with Our signs, [saying], "Bring out your people from darknesses into the light and remind them of the days of Allah." Indeed in that are signs for everyone patient and grateful.

Ibrahim: (5) "And We certainly sent Moses..."

{أن أخرج} (That you bring forth): It carries the meaning of "that is: bring forth." This is because "sending" (al-irsal) contains the meaning of "saying" (al-qawl), as if it were said: "We sent him and said to him: Bring forth."

It is also permissible that an (أن) is the particle that makes the verb subjunctive (al-nasiba). It is valid for an to be connected to an imperative verb because the purpose is to connect it to something that, together with it, forms the interpretation of a verbal noun (masdar); the imperative verb and other verb forms are equal in their "verb-ness." The evidence for the permissibility of it being the subjunctive particle is the saying: "He signaled to him bi-an if'al (that he should do)," where they prefixed the preposition ba to it. Thus, the estimation is: bi-an ukhrij (by bringing forth) your people.

{وذكرهم بأيام الله} (And remind them of the days of Allah): Warn them of the events that befell the nations before them: the people of Noah, ‘Ad, and Thamud. From this comes the expression "the days of the Arabs" regarding their wars and great battles, such as the Day of Dhu Qar, the Day of al-Fijar, the Day of Quda, and others. This is the apparent meaning.

It is narrated from Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both): "His blessings and His trials." As for His blessings, He shaded them with clouds, sent down manna and quails, and parted the sea for them. As for His trials, it is the destruction of the generations.

{لكل صبار شكور} (For every patient, grateful one): One who is patient regarding the trials of Allah and grateful for His blessings. When he hears of the trials Allah sent upon the nations, or the blessings He poured upon them, he becomes mindful of what is required of him regarding patience and gratitude, and he takes heed. It is also said: He meant "every believer," because gratitude and patience are among their inherent traits, as a way of drawing attention to them.


(6) "And when Moses said to his people: 'Remember the favor of Allah upon you when He saved you from the people of Pharaoh, who were afflicting you with the worst of torment, slaughtering your sons and keeping your women alive. And in that was a great trial from your Lord.'"
