Al-Hijr: (14) "And even if We opened for them..."

[15:14-15] It is read: (ya‘rujūn) with a damma (u) and a kasra (i).

[15:15] {Sukkirat} means: they were bewildered, or their vision was restrained, derived from al-sakr (obstruction) or al-sukr (intoxication).

  • It is read: (sukirat) with takhfif (lightening/no shadda), meaning: they were restrained, just as a river is restrained from flowing.
  • It is read: (sakirat) from al-sukr (intoxication), meaning: they were confused, just as a drunkard is confused.

The meaning is that the stubbornness of these polytheists has reached such an extreme that even if We were to open for them a gate from the gates of heaven, and facilitate for them a ladder to ascend into it, and they were to witness with their own eyes what they witnessed, they would say: "It is something we are imagining; it has no reality," and they would say: "Muhammad has bewitched us with this."

It is also said: The pronoun refers to the angels—meaning: if We showed them the angels ascending into the sky clearly, they would say that. The mention of "daytime" (al-dhulūl) is to ensure their ascent occurs during the day, so that they may clearly perceive what they see. He said innama (only/nothing but) to indicate that they definitively assert that this is nothing but a bewitchment of the eyes.

[15:16-20] {And indeed, We have placed within the heaven great stars and have beautified it for the observers. And We have protected it from every devil expelled [from the mercy of Allah]. Except one who steals a hearing and is pursued by a clear burning flame. And the earth We have spread and cast therein firmly set mountains and caused to grow therein [something] of every well-balanced thing. And We have made for you therein means of living and [for] those for whom you are not providers.}
