Tafsir of Al-Hijr 15:45

The Righteous (al-muttaqi): In the absolute sense, this refers to one who avoids what must be avoided from that which has been forbidden. Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) said: "They avoid disbelief and indecencies," while they may have other sins that are expiated by prayers and other deeds.

"Enter them": This implies an unspoken command (as if it were said to them: "Enter them"). Al-Hasan read it as udkhuluha (Enter them).

"In peace": Meaning, safe and secure, or that peace is offered to you—the angels greet you with peace.

"Resentment (al-ghill)": This is the hidden malice in the heart, derived from the concept of something entering deep into the interior (in-ghalla and taghalghala). If one of them held resentment toward another in this world, Allah will extract that from their hearts and purify their souls.

• Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) said: "I hope that I, Uthman, Talha, and al-Zubayr are among them."
• Al-Harith al-A'war narrated: I was sitting with Ali when the son of Talha arrived. Ali said to him, "Welcome, son of my brother. By Allah, I hope that I and your father are among those of whom Allah, the Exalted, said: 'And We will remove whatever is in their breasts of resentment.' A man said to him, 'Never! Allah is too just to gather you and Talha in one place.' Ali replied, 'Then for whom was this verse revealed, you fool?'"

It is also said: The meaning is that Allah purified their hearts from envying one another regarding their ranks in Paradise, removed all resentment from them, and instilled mutual love and affection within them.

"Brothers": This is in the accusative case (nasb) as a state (hal).

"On thrones, facing one another": This is also in the accusative case. Mujahid said: The thrones rotate with them wherever they turn, so that they remain facing one another in all their states.

"Inform My servants that it is I who am the Forgiving, the Merciful. And that My punishment is the painful punishment."
