Tafsir of Al-Hijr 15:87

"And We have certainly given you seven..."

{Seven}: Seven verses, which is the Fatiha. Or seven surahs, which are the Tiwal (the long ones). There is disagreement regarding the seventh:

• It is said: Al-Anfal and Bara'ah (together), because they are in the ruling of a single surah, which is why the Basmala was not placed between them.
• It is said: Surah Yunus.
• It is said: They are the Al-Ha-Mim (the Hawamim).
• Or: Seven scrolls, which are the Asba' (the seven divisions of the Quran).

{Al-Mathani}: Derived from tathniya (doubling/repetition), because the Fatiha is repeatedly recited in prayer and elsewhere. Or, it is derived from thana' (praise), because it contains praise of Allah.

• If it refers to the verse (the Fatiha), it is an adjective meaning "doubled" or "praised."
• If it refers to the surahs or the Asba', it is because of the repetition of stories, admonitions, promises, and threats within them, and because they praise Allah through His supreme acts and beautiful attributes.

{From}: It is either for clarification (bayan) or for partition (tab'id). It is for partition if you mean the Fatiha or the Tiwal, and for clarification if you mean the Asba'. It is also possible that all of Allah’s books are Mathani because they praise Him and contain repeated admonitions, and the Quran is a part of them.

If you ask: How is it valid to conjoin "the Great Quran" to "the seven," when it is merely conjoining a thing to itself? I say: If by "the seven" you mean the Fatiha or the Tiwal, then the name "Quran" applies to what is beyond them, for it is a name that applies to the part just as it applies to the whole. Do you not see His saying: "We have revealed to you this Quran" (referring to Surah Yusuf)? If you specify the Asba', the meaning is: "We have given you that which is called the Seven Mathani and the Great Quran," meaning: that which combines these two attributes—praise (or repetition) and greatness.

"Do not extend your eyes toward that by which We have given enjoyment to categories of them, and do not grieve over them. And lower your wing to the believers. And say, 'Indeed, I am the clear warner.'"
