Open in Qurani

Al-Hijr: (88) "Do not extend your eyes..."

"Do not extend your eyes" Meaning: Do not cast your gaze with the longing of one who desires it and wishes for it.

"To that which We have given enjoyment to pairs of them" Meaning: To various types of the disbelievers.

If you ask: How does this connect to what preceded it? I say: He is saying to His Messenger (ﷺ): You have been given the greatest blessing, to which every other blessing—no matter how great—is insignificant and trivial, and that is the Magnificent Qur’an. Therefore, you must be content with it and not extend your eyes toward the fleeting enjoyments of this world.

From this is the Hadith: "He is not of us who does not recite the Qur’an with a melodious voice," and the Hadith of Abu Bakr: "Whoever is given the Qur’an and then sees that anyone else has been given something of this world better than what he has been given, he has belittled what is great and magnified what is small."

It is said: Seven caravans belonging to the Jews of Banu Qurayza and Banu Nadir arrived from Busra and Adhri'at, containing various types of fabrics, perfumes, jewels, and other goods. The Muslims said, "If only these riches were ours, we would have strengthened ourselves with them and spent them in the way of Allah." So, Allah (Mighty and Majestic is He) said to them: "I have given you seven verses [the seven oft-repeated verses, i.e., Al-Fatiha] which are better than these seven caravans."

"And do not grieve over them" Meaning: Do not wish for their wealth, and do not grieve over them because they have not believed, such that Islam might be strengthened by their place and the believers might flourish through them.

"And lower your wing to those who follow you of the believers" Meaning: Be humble toward the poor and weak believers who are with you, and be content with the lack of faith of the rich and powerful.

"And say" To them: "Indeed, I am the clear warner." I warn you with clarity and proof that the punishment of Allah is descending upon you.

"Just as We sent down upon the dividers, who have made the Qur’an into portions."
