Al-Hijr: (95) "Indeed, We are sufficient for you against the mockers."

Regarding the mockers: According to Urwah ibn al-Zubayr, they were five men of age and status: al-Walid ibn al-Mughirah, al-As ibn Wa’il, al-Aswad ibn Abd Yaghuth, al-Aswad ibn al-Muttalib, and al-Harith ibn al-Talatalah. Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with him) stated: They all died before the Battle of Badr.

The account of their demise: Gabriel (peace be upon him) said to the Prophet (peace be upon him): "I have been commanded to suffice you against them."

  • Al-Walid ibn al-Mughirah: Gabriel gestured toward his shin. As he passed by some arrows, one caught his garment. Out of arrogance, he did not turn to remove it, so it struck a vein in his heel, severing it, and he died.
  • Al-As ibn Wa’il: Gabriel gestured toward the sole of his foot. A thorn entered it, and he cried, "I have been stung! I have been stung!" His leg swelled until it became like a millstone, and he died.
  • Al-Aswad ibn al-Muttalib: Gabriel gestured toward his eyes, and he became blind.
  • Al-Harith ibn Qays: Gabriel gestured toward his nose; he blew out pus and died.
  • Al-Aswad ibn Abd Yaghuth: While he was sitting at the base of a tree, Gabriel gestured toward him. He began to ram his head against the tree and strike his face with thorns until he died.

"And We already know that your breast is constrained by what they say. So exalt [Allah] with praise of your Lord and be among those who prostrate. And worship your Lord until there comes to you the certainty [death]."
