Tafsir of An-Nahl 16:10

{For you} This is connected to "sends down," or it is a predicate for "drink." "Drink" (sharāb) refers to that which is drunk.

{Trees} Meaning the trees that livestock graze upon. In a ḥadīth from ‘Ikrimah: "Do not consume the price of trees, for it is suḥt (ill-gotten gain)." He means fodder (kalā’).

{You pasture} Derived from sāmat al-māshiyah (the livestock grazed). Thus, it is sā’imah (grazing livestock), and its owner asāmahā (let it graze). It comes from sūmah, meaning a mark, because grazing leaves marks upon the earth. It has been recited as yunbitu (He causes to grow) with both yā’ and nūn.

If you ask: Why is it said {and of all the fruits}? I say: Because "all the fruits" exist only in Paradise. What is grown on earth is only a portion of the whole, serving as a reminder.

{They reflect} They observe, and through these [fruits], they infer His existence, His power, and His wisdom.

The Verse: A clear indication. Some have recited yunabbitu (He causes to grow) with a shaddah. Ubayy ibn Ka‘b recited: yunbitu lakum bihi az-zar‘u wa-z-zaytūnu wa-n-nakhīlu wa-l-a‘nābu (He causes to grow for you thereby the crops, the olives, the date palms, and the grapes) in the nominative case (raf‘).

{And He has subjected for you the night and the day and the sun and the moon, and the stars are subjected by His command. Indeed, in that are signs for a people who reason.}
