Tafsir of An-Nahl 16:2

"He sends down the angels with the Spirit..."

It is recited as yunazzilu (He sends down) with both light and heavy emphasis. It is also recited as tanazzalu al-malāʾikatu (the angels descend), meaning they descend.

"By His command upon whom He wills of His servants..."

"With the Spirit from His command..." Meaning: With that which revives hearts deadened by ignorance, through His revelation; or with that which stands in the religion as the soul stands in the body.

"That [saying], 'Warn [mankind]...'" This is a substitute (badal) for "the Spirit." It means: He sends them down with the instruction to warn. Its underlying structure is: "with the fact that you should warn," meaning: "the matter is that I say to you: warn." Alternatively, the particle an (that) is explanatory (mufassirah), because the descent of the angels with revelation contains the meaning of speech.

"That there is no deity except Me, so fear Me." The meaning of anḏirū (warn) is: "Make it known that there is no deity except Me." It is derived from the expression naḏartu bi-kaḏā (I have made such-and-such known/informed of it). The meaning is: He says to them, "Inform the people of My statement: 'There is no deity except Me,' so fear Me."

"He created the heavens and the earth in truth. High is He above what they associate with Him. He created man from a sperm-drop, then at once, he is a clear adversary."
