Tafsir
Verse range: 16:22-23
{إِلَٰهُكُمْ إِلَٰهٌ وَاحِدٌ} It means that it has been established, through the preceding refutation of divinity belonging to anyone other than Him, that divinity belongs to Him alone, with no partner. The result of this established oneness and the clarity of its proof was their persistence in polytheism, their hearts denying this oneness, and their arrogance toward it and toward acknowledging it.
{لَا جَرَمَ} Truly.
{أَنَّ اللَّهَ يَعْلَمُ مَا يُسِرُّونَ وَمَا يُعْلِنُونَ} He knows their secrets and what they make public, so He will recompense them. This is a threat.
{إِنَّهُ لَا يُحِبُّ الْمُسْتَكْبِرِينَ} It is possible that He means those who are arrogant toward monotheism, i.e., the polytheists. It is also possible that it is general, encompassing every arrogant person, and these [polytheists] fall under its generality.
{وَإِذَا قِيلَ لَهُمْ مَاذَا أَنْزَلَ رَبُّكُمْ قَالُوا أَسَاطِيرُ الْأَوَّلِينَ * لِيَحْمِلُوا أَوْزَارَهُمْ كَامِلَةً يَوْمَ الْقِيَامَةِ وَمِنْ أَوْزَارِ الَّذِينَ يُضِلُّونَهُمْ بِغَيْرِ عِلْمٍ أَلَا سَاءَ مَا يَزِرُونَ}
