ﲾ ﲿ ﳀ ﳁ ﳂ ﳃ ﳄ ﳅ ﳆ ﳇ ﳈ ﳉ ﳊ ﳋ ﳌ ﳍ ﳎ ﳏ ﳐ ﳑ
And those who emigrated for [the cause of] Allah after they had been wronged - We will surely settle them in this world in a good place; but the reward of the Hereafter is greater, if only they could know.
Tafsir
Verse range: 16:41-42
They are the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) and his companions. The people of Mecca oppressed them, so they fled with their religion to Allah. Among them were those who migrated to Abyssinia and then to Medina, thus combining both migrations. Others migrated only to Medina.
It is also said: They are those who were imprisoned and tortured after the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) had migrated, and whenever they tried to leave, they were pursued and brought back. Among them were Bilal, Suhayb, Khabbab, and Ammar.
Suhayb (may Allah be pleased with him) said to them: "I am an old man; if I am with you, I am of no use to you, and if I am against you, I do no harm." So he ransomed himself from them with his wealth and migrated. When Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him) saw him, he said: "The trade has profited, O Suhayb." And Umar said to him: "Suhayb is an excellent man; even if he did not fear Allah, he would not disobey Him." This is high praise, meaning: even if Allah had not created the Fire, he would still have obeyed Him.
"A good place" (hasanatan) is an adjective for the verbal noun (the act of settling), meaning: We will surely grant them a good settlement. In the recitation of Ali (may Allah be pleased with him), it is lanuthwi'annahum (We will surely provide them a good abode).
It is said: We will grant them a good position in this world, which is victory over the people of Mecca who oppressed them, and over the Arabs entirely, and over the people of the East and the West.
Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) used to say when giving a gift to one of the Emigrants: "Take this, may Allah bless you in it; this is what your Lord promised you in this world, and what is stored for you in the Hereafter is greater."
It is also said: We will settle them in a good dwelling, which is Medina, where its people sheltered them and supported them.
The pronoun refers to the disbelievers, meaning: If they knew that Allah would gather for these oppressed people both the world and the Hereafter, they would have desired their religion. It is also possible that the pronoun refers to the Emigrants, meaning: If they knew that, they would have increased in their striving and patience.
They are those who were patient. Or, "I mean those who were patient." Both are forms of praise, meaning: They were patient under torture and in leaving their homeland—which is the Sanctuary of Allah, beloved to every heart, and even more so to the hearts of those for whom it is their birthplace—and they were patient in their struggle and the sacrifice of their souls for the sake of Allah.
