Tafsir
Verse range: 16:56
{And they assign to what they do not know} Meaning: to their idols. The meaning of "they do not know them" is that they name them "gods" and believe that they harm, benefit, and intercede with God, while this is not the case. In reality, they are inanimate objects that neither harm nor benefit; thus, they are ignorant regarding them.
It is also said: The pronoun in {they do not know} refers to the idols themselves. Meaning: they are things not characterized by knowledge, nor do they possess perception. Did they assign them a share of their livestock and crops or not? They used to assign that to them as a means of drawing near to them.
{You will surely be questioned} A threat.
{about what you used to fabricate} Regarding the falsehood in your claim that they are gods and that they are worthy of being drawn near to.
{And they assign to Allah daughters—exalted is He—while for themselves is what they desire. And when one of them is given tidings of a female, his face becomes darkened, and he is suppressed with grief. He hides himself from the people because of the evil of that which he has been given tidings of: should he keep it in humiliation or bury it in the ground? Unquestionably, evil is what they decide.}
