{بظلمهم}
By their injustice, meaning: by their disbelief and their acts of disobedience.
{ما ترك عليها}
Meaning: upon the earth.
{من دابة}
At all; He would have destroyed it entirely due to the ill-omen of the wrongdoers' injustice.
- From Abu Hurayrah: He heard a man say, "The wrongdoer harms only himself." He replied, "Nay, by Allah! Even the bustard bird dies in its nest due to the injustice of the wrongdoer."
- From Ibn Masʿūd: "The dung beetle is nearly destroyed in its burrow because of the sin of the son of Adam."
- Alternative interpretation: Or [it means] "from a wrong-doing creature."
- From Ibn ʿAbbās: {From a creature} meaning: from a polytheist who crawls upon it.
- It is also said: If He had destroyed the parents for their disbelief, there would be no children.
