An-Naḥl: 62

{And they attribute to Allah that which they dislike} for themselves, such as daughters, partners in their leadership, and the belittling of their messengers and the disregard for their messages. They attribute to Him the basest of their wealth, while giving their idols the most precious of it.

{And their tongues describe} despite this, {that they will have the best} with Allah, as in His saying: “And if I am returned to my Lord, indeed, I will have the best with Him” (Fuṣṣilat: 50).

It is narrated that someone said to a wealthy man: "How will you be on the Day of Resurrection when Allah says: 'Bring what you gave to the rulers and their aides'? Then, fine livestock, garments, and various types of luxurious wealth will be brought. And when He says: 'Bring what you gave to Me,' and there is brought only scraps, rags, and things of no value—do you not feel ashamed of that standing?" He then recited this verse.

Mujāhid said: {That they will have the best} is the statement of the Quraysh: "We have the sons." And {that they will have the best} is a substitute for "the lie." It is also read as al-kadhb (the lie), as a plural of kadhūb (liar), describing their tongues.

{Neglected} (mufruṭūn): It is read with the rāʾ opened and broken, and with the letter lightened or doubled:

  • The opened (mufratūn): Meaning those sent forward to the Fire and hastened toward it, from the phrase "I sent so-and-so ahead," or "I sent him ahead in search of water." It is also said to mean "forgotten and abandoned," from the phrase "I left so-and-so behind me," meaning I left him and forgot him.
  • The broken and lightened (mufriṭūn): Meaning those who have exceeded the limits in disobedience.
  • The doubled (mufarriṭūn): Meaning those who have been negligent in their acts of obedience and what is required of them.

{By Allah, We did certainly send [messengers] to nations before you, but Satan made their deeds attractive to them. And he is their ally today, and they will have a painful punishment.}
