And Allah has sent down rain from the sky and given life thereby to the earth after its lifelessness. Indeed in that is a sign for a people who listen.

An-Naḥl: 64–65

{And [We have not sent down to you the Book, except that you may make clear to them that wherein they have differed and as guidance and mercy for a people who believe.}

{And guidance * and mercy}: These are conjoined to the position of {that you may make clear} (li-tubayyina). However, they are in the accusative case as mafʿūl lahu (causative objects), because they are the actions of the One who sent down the Book.

The lām (preposition) was prefixed to {that you may make clear} because it is the action of the addressee (the Prophet), not the action of the Sender. A mafʿūl lahu is only in the accusative when it is the action of the agent of the verb being explained.

The matters in which they differed include:

  1. The Resurrection: For there were those among them who believed in it, such as ‘Abd al-Muṭṭalib.
  2. Various matters: Regarding prohibitions, denials, and affirmations.

{For a people who believe}: A hearing of fairness and contemplation; for whoever does not hear with his heart is as if he were deaf, not hearing at all.

{And indeed, for you in grazing livestock is a lesson. We give you to drink from what is in their bellies – from between excretion and blood – pure milk, palatable to the drinkers.}
